The Northwest Chocolate Festival is held the first weekend of October every year. It lasts two days and is acclaimed as the TOP SHOW for CHOCOLATE in North America and one of the best shows for Chocolate in the world for the past 15-years. During the festival you can go to the world’s top education workshops, see some of the best chocolate exhibitors, and indulgent chocolate tastes!

The Flavel House Museum was the home of Captain George Flavel (1823-1893), one of Astoria's most influential citizens in the late 1800s. Captain Flavel was a noted bar pilot on the Columbia River and a prominent businessman.

Every year in September, Mount Angel holds their annual Oktoberfest. The Weingarten has a rustic Old-World feel. Large wooden beams overhead with sawdust on the floor, Bavarian chalets are the bars serving beer and wine.

There are two Lost Lakes in Oregon. One is in Mount Hood National Forest near Mount Hood, and the other, which I will discuss, is in Willamette National Forest near Sisters, Oregon.

On the Washington side of the Columbia, was armed with smoothbore cannons to protect the mouth of the Columbia River from enemies. Three years later, in 1865, Fort Stevens, complete with a moat and drawbridge, was established on the Oregon side. In 1875, Fort Canby came into existence to improve the defense of the Columbia. In 1896, Fort Columbia was built, and in 1897, Fort Stevens was enhanced. The mouth of the Columbia River was now protected with three forts.

The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse was established in 1856, making it one of the oldest lighthouses on the West Coast of the United States. Its creation was prompted by the treacherous waters of the Columbia River Bar, known for its dangerous currents and frequent shipwrecks. The lighthouse was built to guide vessels safely through these perilous waters, and its light has been a beacon of hope for mariners for over a century.

The North Head Lighthouse was commissioned in 1890, built to complement the existing Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. Its construction was a response to the increasing number of shipwrecks in the area, particularly at the mouth of the Columbia River, where the turbulent waters posed a significant threat to vessels.

The Cape Falcon Trail (aka tree root trail) spans approximately 2.6 miles round-trip, making it a perfect option for a half-day hike. The trailhead is conveniently located off Highway 101, just south of Manzanita. The hike is rated as moderate, which means it’s accessible for most fitness levels, but be prepared for some elevation changes along the way.

Hells Canyon, Idaho, Seven Devils area. 8-mile round-trip hike. Hells Canyon is broader and deeper than the Grand Canyon and is known for the jet boat rides on the Snake River. It lies about 7,000 feet below the Heaven's Gate Lookout. Perched high above Hells Canyon at the entrance of the Seven Devils Mountains, Heaven's Gate Lookout is a view that's well worth the rugged drive. True to its name, the view from this lookout is heavenly, and you'll want to see it for yourself.

In the 1980s, Antelope gained national attention when it became the site of a controversial religious community known as the Rajneesh movement. Bridal Veil was established in the 1880s, finding its roots primarily as a logging town. Boasting abundant timber resources, its population flourished with the construction of the Columbia River Highway in the early 1900s. At its peak, the city housed around 300 residents. However, as the logging industry declined, so too did the community's vitality.

Cape Meares Lighthouse was built to address the growing need for navigational aids along the treacherous waters of the Pacific Ocean. The lighthouse was commissioned after numerous shipwrecks in the area, prompting the U.S. Lighthouse Board to take action. Constructed from local materials, the lighthouse was designed to withstand the harsh coastal weather while providing a reliable light source for passing vessels.

Millican was established in the early 1900s, primarily as a railroad town. The arrival of the railroad was a significant turning point for many small towns in the West, and Millican was no exception. The town was named after a local rancher, and it quickly became a hub for agriculture and commerce.
