No!!! The Fruit Loop is not named after the Kellogg's cereal. It's a 35-mile scenic trip through the fruit orchards, small towns, and back roads of the Hood River Valley. Located approximately 45 minutes east of Portland via the Columbia Gorge and directly south of the city of Hood River, the area is Oregon's largest fruit-growing region. Over thirty percent of the nation's winter pears are harvested here, along with a variety of apples, berries, peaches, cherries, and wineries. The best way to plan a trip here is to conduct some research, as the various fruits and harvest times can be a challenge to navigate. I came here multiple times to get some in-season fruit and take pictures for this post. These are some of the things to get along the Loop: strawberries, lavender, flowers, cherries, blueberries, peaches, summer pears, fall pears, apples, and pumpkins. Below is a map of the u-pick and harvest schedules to help you decide when you would like to come. I would recommend making Panorama Point your first stop. Panorama Point is on the east side of the road, a few miles south of Hood River. You get great views of Mt. Randy Kiyokawa is a third-generation orchardist from Parkdale, Oregon, whose grandfather emigrated from Japan in 1905 and, through hard work, started farming in Hood River in 1911. Randy’s father, Mamoru, and mother, Michiko, met in an internment camp where their families were placed during World War II.  After serving in the U.S. Military Intelligence Service, Mamoru returned to the Hood River Valley in 1951 with Michiko and purchased a 25-acre orchard in Parkdale, which has been the nucleus of the current 207-acre farm.  You have to try the Sekai Ichi Apple, which is a Japanese apple. In 2018, the Kiyokawa Orchard was voted the number one orchard in the United States by the Readers' Choice Awards. This is an honor that very few places receive, and you should make this a stop on the Fruit Loop Road Trip. Yes, the road trip is a Loop, so I'll give that part of it credit. I also thought that, given the number of Wineries on the Fruit Loop, maybe it was named because you will get pretty "Looped" if you stop at all of them. I highly recommend that if you plan to visit the wineries on the Loop, consider hiring a tour guide who will drive you, so you don't have to worry about drinking and driving. The inn was built around 1883 for Henry Smith, a local merchant-entrepreneur. As it was known then, local people crafted the Wolf Creek Tavern exceptionally well. It served local traffic to mines and stage travelers connecting between Roseburg and Redding before the completion of the Oregon and California railroad through the Siskiyou Mountains of Oregon in 1887. Known then as the Wolf Creek Tavern, Smith's hotel featured 16 bedrooms, separate men’s and women’s parlors, and a large dining room. While the rooms had no private bathrooms, each offered a bowl and a pitcher of fresh water. If any of the guests wished to have extra privacy, the hotel had a deluxe outhouse just outside the back door.      It seems that, during the Gold Rush, one of the toughest and most famous of the stagecoach drivers making the run south from Oregon was One-Eyed Charlie Parkhurst. As Charlie’s reputation had it, he “drove his team hard, spat his tobacco juice harder, and cussed like Sam Clemens.” They say that he only missed work on the day after payday when he was too hungover to drive. In 1868, Charlie registered to vote so that he could cast his ballot for Ulysses S. Grant.   When One-Eyed Charlie died at the age of 67, the mortician found something unexpected: Charlie had been Charlotte, an orphan girl who got out of the orphanage and into stagecoach driving by dressing and acting as a man. Given that Charlie voted in the 1868 presidential election, some say that she was the first woman in the country to do so.   Wolf Creek Inn is the oldest continuously operated hotel in the Pacific Northwest. It is here that Jack London completed his novel, Valley of the Moon. As an essential stop on the 16-day stagecoach journey from San Francisco to Portland, the Wolf Creek Inn has housed practically every important person in the Northwest during the early history of Oregon. In the early days of movies, the Inn became a refuge for beleaguered actors seeking an escape from demanding Hollywood studios. Clark Gable was a good friend of the innkeeper in the 1930s and stopped by several times while fishing the Rogue River just a few miles west of the Inn. Other visitors who have signed the guest register include Carole Lombard and Orson Wells. Robert Redford spent some time here while filming the fly-fishing scenes of A River Runs Through It . Between 1975 and 1979, the Inn was acquired by the State of Oregon and restored. Wolf Creek Tavern is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is among the best preserved and oldest active travelers' inns in Oregon. The haunted tales have caught the attention of the Travel Channel’s "Ghost Adventures" crew and paranormal experts at the famed Pioneer Saloon in Nevada. Two of its mediums came to the same conclusion as so many guests: The creepiest place might be room eight, where most ghostly vibes have been reported. The whole inn and the woods have paranormal activity. You don’t need to stay here to become an amateur ghost hunter. Self-guided tours — no reservations necessary — are possible year-round (check the website for days and hours). These are the same days the restaurant is open, so grab lunch and stroll the rooms afterward. On weekends from late May through early September, you can join a free 50-minute guided tour of the inn’s history led by an Oregon State Parks ranger. Call ahead to confirm dates and times.  This is the website where you can find the information. The Historic Wolf Creek Inn According to legend, several people died or disappeared under mysterious circumstances at the inn. Some of the alleged victims include: ·        A young girl who was murdered in room 8 by her father. ·        A miner who was stabbed to death in a fight over gold in room 5. ·        A woman who hanged herself in the attic after being rejected by her lover. ·        A man who shot himself in the basement after losing his fortune in the stock market crash of 1929. ·        A couple who vanished without a trace after staying in room 6. There is even a Clark Gable room, which he used to stay in while he was here. Rumor has it he haunts it also.  There are two episodes of the Ghost Adventure Crew here. The first one is the Season 19 episode. 1, and the second is Season 19 episode 13. In one of the episodes, Billy talks about a Native American who was hanged here to celebrate the opening of the inn. I have to say that I'm debunking this because I have conducted extensive research and cannot find any mention of this. Not all you hear is necessarily true. If you want to come here and do some paranormal investigating, I recommend spending the night in room 8. The rooms here are relatively inexpensive and will cost about $120 a night. The restaurant here is only open Thursday to Sunday, so you may have to consider that also because there is more to do here when the restaurant is open, including ghost tours. If you are into stagecoach history, across the road is a little park that talks about the Applegate Trail and the history of stagecoaches in the area. It is a tiny park, and you can walk around the loop and read the plaques about the history in about 15 minutes. As I stepped into the enchanting realm of Ayutthaya Historical Park, it felt like stepping back in time. The air was filled with centuries of history, and the remnants of a once-thriving kingdom eagerly shared their tales of glory and tradition. My visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site was not merely a sightseeing trip; it was an immersive exploration of culture, architecture, and the heart of a civilization that once ruled Southeast Asia. A Glimpse into the History of Ayutthaya Historical Park Ayutthaya, established as the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom in 1350, thrived until its destruction by the Burmese in 1767. The city was a hub of cultural exchange, influenced by trade with nations such as China, Japan, and Portugal. As I strolled through the park, I could almost hear merchants bargaining and children giggling in the bustling streets. The park itself is a vast landscape dotted with the ruins of temples, palaces, and statues that once stood tall. Each structure holds a story, waiting to be uncovered. For instance, at its peak, Ayutthaya had over 400 temples, showcasing a blend of architectural styles. This rich tapestry of history was fascinating to explore. The Majestic Wat Phra Si Sanphet One of my first stops was Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Ayutthaya's most significant temple. Approaching the site, I was struck by the sight of three towering chedis, which reach heights of up to 66 meters. The grandeur of this place left me in awe. Standing before these structures, I admired the intricate details of the brickwork that had survived centuries. This temple served as the royal temple for Ayutthaya's kings and influenced many other temples throughout Thailand. I could envision grand royal ceremonies taking place here, filled with the chanting of monks and the soothing scent of incense. The peaceful environment invited reflection on the rich history that enveloped me. The Enigmatic Wat Mahathat Next, I ventured to Wat Mahathat, renowned for its iconic Buddha head, which has become entwined in the roots of a banyan tree. This temple was once a center for meditation and education, and witnessing nature reclaiming a part of this sacred space was enthralling. As I gazed at the Buddha head, I felt a strong connection to the past. The scene was a powerful reminder of time's passage and nature's resilience. The contrast between human craftsmanship and nature was striking, leaving me to ponder the tales held within these ancient stones. The Splendor of Wat Chaiwatthanaram My journey continued to Wat Chaiwatthanaram, a temple that beautifully showcases the Khmer architectural style. The layout, featuring a central prang surrounded by eight smaller prangs, captivated my imagination. As I wandered the temple grounds, the intricate carvings and tranquil atmosphere captivated me. Built in 1630 by King Prasat Thong to honor his mother, this royal temple offers a glimpse into the past. As the day waned, the setting sun bathed the ruins in golden light, creating a magical setting. I found a quiet nook to sit, absorbing the beauty surrounding me and feeling grateful for this encounter with history. The Vibrant Local Culture While the temples were undoubtedly the highlight, the local culture surrounding Ayutthaya Historical Park added an enriching layer to my visit. The lively markets, filled with the aroma of street food and laughter, provided insight into the daily lives of the local community. I treated myself to local delicacies like boat noodles, which are renowned for their rich broth and tender meat, and mango sticky rice, a sweet and satisfying treat. The warmth and friendliness of the locals enriched my experience. During a chat with a vendor selling handmade crafts, I learned how the community is dedicated to preserving Ayutthaya's cultural heritage. According to local sources, around 70% of the artisans in Ayutthaya focus on traditional crafts, showcasing the community's dedication to both their history and future. Reflections on My Journey As my day at Ayutthaya Historical Park concluded, I found myself thinking deeply about the incredible journey I had taken. The ruins, the captivating stories, and the welcoming people painted a complete picture of Thailand's vast history. Wandering through the park, it felt as if I was part of the historical narrative that unfolded in this remarkable location. The beauty of Ayutthaya lies in its stunning architecture and the enduring spirit of resilience and continuity that permeates the air. A Journey Worth Taking Visiting Ayutthaya Historical Park was more than a simple outing; it was a time-traveling adventure that left an indelible mark on my heart. The majestic temples and vibrant local culture intertwined with the stories of a bygone era, creating an unforgettable experience.
