When I first heard about Twanoh State Park, I was skeptical. Washington has plenty of well-known parks, so why seek out a lesser-known spot? But after spending some time here, I realized Twanoh is a true hidden gem. It offers a peaceful escape with stunning views, diverse wildlife, and plenty of outdoor activities without the crowds. If you love nature and want to explore a quieter side of Washington’s outdoors, Twanoh should be on your list.
Discovering Twanoh State Park
Twanoh State Park sits on the Hood Canal, a long, narrow waterway that branches off Puget Sound. The park covers about 165 acres and offers more than 3,800 feet of saltwater shoreline. What makes Twanoh special is its combination of forest, beach, and tidal flats. You can walk through old-growth trees, explore tide pools, or simply relax by the water.
When I arrived, the first thing that struck me was the calm atmosphere. Unlike some busier parks, Twanoh felt like a quiet retreat. The air smelled fresh with pine and salt, and the only sounds were birds and gentle waves. It’s a place where you can slow down and really connect with nature.
Hiking Trails That Show Off Nature’s Variety
One of the best ways to experience Twanoh is by hiking its trails. The park has several easy-to-moderate trails that wind through forests and along the shoreline. I took the Twanoh Trail, which loops through dense stands of cedar and fir. The trail is well-marked and shaded, perfect for a peaceful walk.
Along the way, I spotted deer tracks and heard bald eagles overhead. The forest floor was covered with ferns and wildflowers, adding bursts of green and color. The trail eventually leads to viewpoints overlooking Hood Canal, where you can watch boats and sometimes even seals.
For a different perspective, the Beach Trail lets you walk right along the water’s edge. At low tide, you can explore tide pools filled with starfish, crabs, and small fish. It’s a great spot for families or anyone interested in marine life.
Camping Under the Stars
Twanoh State Park has a campground with about 54 sites, including tent, trailer, and RV sites. I stayed overnight in a tent, and it was one of the most relaxing camping experiences I’ve had. The sites are nestled among tall trees, giving a sense of privacy and quiet.
What I appreciated most was how close the campground is to the beach. After setting up my tent, I took a short walk to the shore and watched the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and pink. At night, the stars were bright and clear, with no city lights to spoil the view.
The campground has basic amenities like restrooms and picnic tables, but it still feels very natural and unspoiled. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to disconnect and enjoy simple outdoor living.
Wildlife Watching Opportunities
Twanoh State Park is a great place to see wildlife in its natural habitat. During my visit, I saw a variety of birds, including herons, kingfishers, and ospreys. The park’s location on Hood Canal makes it a good spot for marine life.
I was lucky enough to spot a harbor seal swimming near the shore. If you visit during the right season, you might even see migrating salmon or orcas passing through the canal. Birdwatchers will find plenty to enjoy, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
The park’s mix of forest and shoreline creates diverse habitats that support many species. It’s a reminder of how important it is to protect these natural areas.
Activities Beyond Hiking and Camping
While hiking and camping are highlights, Twanoh offers other activities that make a visit memorable. Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular on Hood Canal’s calm waters. I rented a kayak nearby and paddled along the shoreline, enjoying the peaceful water and views of the forested hills.
Fishing is another option. The canal supports species such as salmon and trout, and the park has a small fishing pier. Even if you don’t fish, the pier is a nice spot to sit and watch the water.
For families, the park has a playground and open spaces for picnics and games. It’s a welcoming place for visitors of all ages.
Tips for Visiting Twanoh State Park
If you decide to explore Twanoh, here are some tips based on my experience:
Plan ahead for camping: The campground fills up on weekends, especially in summer. Reserve your spot early.

Leave no trace: Carry out all trash and keep the park clean so others can enjoy it.

What makes Twanoh State Park stand out is its balance of accessibility and solitude. It’s easy to reach from Seattle or Olympia, but it doesn’t feel crowded or commercialized. The park’s natural beauty is genuine and well-preserved.
For me, Twanoh was a reminder that you don’t need to travel far or visit famous spots to find amazing outdoor experiences. Sometimes, the best places are the ones that fly under the radar.
